Algoma U and Northern College Sign Joint Admission Agreement

Beginning in the fall of 2015, students at Northern College of Applied Arts and Technology can enjoy a special Joint Admission Agreement with Algoma University, allowing graduates from diploma programs easier access and entrance into degree programs.

“We are very excited to sign the Joint Admissions Agreement with Northern College which provides an excellent opportunity for their students as we recognize prior learning and credit transfer with a seamless admission process for eligible candidates. The agreement also strengthens the existing partnership we have with Northern College in an effort to meet the needs of the students throughout the northeast region, that is, access to university programming,” said Dave Marasco, Registrar at Algoma University.

The new agreement will reduce the time, cost, and barriers that exist in transferring to a degree program. It will also allow students the opportunity to maximize their post-secondary education by combining their college diploma with a university degree and university-level learning.

“Algoma University is very pleased to be working with Northern College to create new pathways that enable students from our region, and beyond, increased access to university level studies. We have been delighted with our ongoing collaboration with Northern College and see this as another important step in our continued effort to enhance post-secondary educational access and our special institutional mission,” said the University’s Academic Dean, Dr. Richard McCutcheon.

Northern College students in two- or three-year programs will be guaranteed admission if they complete a Joint Admission Application within their first 30 days of studying at Northern College. Students will be provided with updated credit transfer frameworks and access to academic advisors, learning resources, library services, and sporting events. They will also be exempt from paying the additional costs associated with being a transfer student.

“At Northern College, we’re driven by our commitment to increase access to post-secondary education for all learners in Northeastern Ontario,” added Fred Gibbons, President of Northern College. “That’s why we’re so pleased to be signing this agreement with Algoma University to provide new pathways for Northern College students and [to] make it easier for our graduates to continue on to earn an undergraduate degree.”

The agreement provides joint admissions to the Bachelor of Business Administration, Bachelor of Arts (general/honours), Bachelor of Computer Science (general/honours). Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Science (general/honours) and the Bachelor of Social Work degree programs.
