COU President’s statement on the province’s plans to help more students pursue postsecondary education through capital expansion

The Council of Ontario Universities is pleased to see the province take the next step to set out the process for the creation of new or expanded campuses to help accommodate the government’s goal of increasing access to university for students.

Creating more space at a time of growth in demand for a university education is an important aspect of a much-needed longer-term capital plan for institutions.

Many universities in Ontario have capital projects that need to go forward, as well as significant campus renewal projects that must be addressed if students are to continue to enjoy a quality university experience. These renewal projects, or deferred maintenance, not only repair leaking roofs and broken windows, but repurpose and transform older buildings to suit the modern learning needs of our students.

Today’s call for proposals expressing interest in new or expanded campuses in underserved areas is a welcomed component of what some universities are seeking – universities appreciate the milestones that have been set to move this process along, including the completion of Strategic Mandate Agreements with each institution. We look forward to spring 2015 when announcements of successful projects will be made.
