Excellence, innovation and passion in nursing education showcased at 2011 COUPN awards

Winners of a series of provincial nursing awards have made outstanding contributions to nursing education in Ontario in a variety of ways, from the development of new tools for use in the nursing field, to the incorporation of innovative teaching methods in the classroom.

The awards are presented each year to outstanding nursing faculty, students, staff and health program partners from across the province by the Council of Ontario University Programs in Nursing (COUPN).

“It is a pleasure to honour the spirit and accomplishments of these leaders in nursing education, who will help us meet the growing demand for skilled nurses in Ontario,” says Dr. Catherine Tompkins, Chair of COUPN and Associate Dean of Health Sciences (Nursing) at McMaster University.

Also recognized this year is a doctoral dissertation that explores the relationship between fluids given to women during childbirth and weight-loss, a screening tool to detect elder mistreatment and several examples of distinction in teaching and learning.

The awards are divided into three main areas: student-doctoral thesis, master’s and undergraduate level; faculty-teaching and research; and external (non-nursing) contribution to nursing education. This year, a new award for collaborative education was added.
