Based on the success of its inaugural year, Humanities 101, a free community-based outreach program, returns this fall to Trent University Durham to provide members of the community with access to post-secondary education opportunities, without any financial or social barriers.
Starting Tuesday, October 6, 2015, Humanities 101 returns with another ten-week, non-credit course program, designed to provide access to higher education to those in the Durham Region who might face barriers, either financial or otherwise – and provide opportunities for lifelong learning.
“Humanities 101 is about offering community members the opportunity to realize that a post-secondary education, whether it be at the college or university level, is a possibility,” said Joe Muldoon, head of Trent University Durham. “We are eager to offer this programming for the second year in the Durham Region and look forward to working with our growing roster of community agencies that help make this program possible.”
Based on similar programs at institutions across Canada, the Humanities 101 program at Trent University Durham is free of charge and requires only a recommendation from a local social services agency. Incidentals including public transportation and writing materials are also covered, and Trent will also include a library card, free refreshments and assistance with childcare expenses.
Reflecting the range of academic programs available at Trent University Durham, Humanities 101 will cover a different subject and area each week ranging from Media Studies and Canadian Studies to Business Administration and Social Work.
Courses are taught by Trent University professors who offer their time to teach the weekly sessions, which include one hour of lecture followed by one hour of seminar discussion.
Last year, 25 members of the community enrolled in the Humanities 101 program at Trent University Durham and the University received positive feedback from both social agencies and students. For fall 2015, Trent is working with over 20 local agencies to recommend students to the program.
