Ontario universities applaud the federal government’s continued commitment to the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS), which will help enhance efforts to attract and retain world-class researchers, innovators and health professionals in Ontario.
“Strong support for academic research is more important than ever to ensure a sustaining economic recovery from the recession,” says Bonnie M. Patterson, COU President and CEO. “This announcement means top researchers and thinkers from Ontario and around the world can continue to bolster economic competitiveness and improve the social well-being of Canadians.”
There are 167 scholarship recipients this year, 62 of whom are in Ontario. Vanier CGS was created to attract and retain world-class doctoral students, and to brand Canada as a global centre of excellence in research and higher learning. Scholarship recipients are awarded $50,000 each year for three years. Vanier CGS is available to both Canadian and international PhD students who study at Canadian universities.
“We thank the federal government for their commitment to higher education and for their recognition that it is an integral part of Canada’s future prosperity,” says Patterson.
