Statement from David Lindsay: Ontario’s Universities Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Colleges, our Partners in Postsecondary Education

“Ontario’s universities congratulate the Ontario college system on their 50th anniversary. Together, colleges and universities advance postsecondary education in Ontario for the benefit of our students, our communities and the province.

Over the past 50 years, the role and function of postsecondary education in Ontario has grown and evolved. Ontario colleges and universities can build on this strong foundation of collaboration and partnership as we develop new ways to work together to meet the shifting economic and educational needs of our students.

One example of such a partnership is the robust system that facilitates credit transfer through the Ontario Council for Articulation and Transfer (ONCAT). More than 55,000 students transfer from college to university and university to college each year through more than 800,000 pathways.

There are many more examples of college and university partnerships that build on the strengths of both institutions and lead to increased student success highlighted on our website.

We are pleased to work with our college partners on innovative programs and partnerships that reflect our shared commitment to further enhance the student experience and to help Ontario succeed in the global knowledge economy by addressing the need for advanced skills in all sectors.

As the economy continues to evolve and change, the need for postsecondary education will continue. We can and must continue to strengthen the higher education sector to ensure we have the talented, skilled and flexible workforce that’s needed for the rapidly changing economy.

Congratulations to Ontario’s colleges for their work and achievements in the last 50 years. We know we will continue to collaborate for the benefit of our students in order to educate, inspire, and engage students while helping to develop the talent pipelines for the workforce of tomorrow.”
