Over 25 years ago, John Charles Polanyi won the Nobel Prize for chemistry, and since 1987 top Ontario researchers have been receiving awards in his name and carrying the torch of inspiration to future generations. This year, five researchers from different fields are being honoured for their work.
The winners of the 2012 Polanyi Prize are:
- Chemistry: Dr. Tao (Toby) Zeng, University of Waterloo
- Physics: Dr. Alex Hayat, University of Toronto
- Literature: Dr. Jennifer Esmail, Wilfrid Laurier University
- Physiology/medicine: Dr. Aristotle Voineskos, University of Toronto, and Dr. Darren Yuen, University of Toronto
“This award helps us recognize five outstanding individuals who are conducting groundbreaking research in their fields,” says Alastair Summerlee, Chair of the Council of Ontario Universities (COU) and President of the University of Guelph. “The Polanyi Prizes illustrate the quality and breadth of Ontario university research, the impact of which is felt well beyond our province.”
The areas of research for which this year’s winners are being honoured are: a chemistry study that will help Canada become a leader in the hydrogen economy; physiological and medical studies to help delay the age at which Alzheimer Disease-related brain changes occur; research that provides new insights on the fundamental physics of light-matter interaction and quantum optics; a study on how Victorians hierarchized cognitive abilities; and a study to identify a new therapy that will improve patient outcomes after specific kidney injuries.
Polanyi Prizes celebrate the work of post-doctoral researchers in the early stages of their careers. Created and funded by the Ontario government, the awards are administrated by COU.
“Universities prepare the next generation of innovators who will help drive economic development, commercial success and social progress in our country,” says Bonnie M. Patterson, COU President and CEO. “The work of these researchers will also contribute to the evolution of their disciplines and the education of students.”
