Professor Glen Jones appointed new OISE dean at the University of Toronto

University of Toronto Vice-President and Provost, Professor Cheryl Regehr, has announced Professor Glen Jones, as the 10th head of the university’s Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) for a five-year term, beginning July 1, 2016.

Professor Jones, who has been the Interim Dean for 10 months, was considered as part of an extensive international search for a new Dean.

“Professor Jones has a stellar scholarly reputation nationally and internationally and is regarded as a leader in his field. He is well acquainted with OISE’s programs and curriculum, faculty, students, staff and alumni. He is admired by the OISE community for his highly collaborative and thoughtful leadership style, “ said Professor Regehr.

Accomplished career

Professor Jones has been part of the OISE community for almost 30 years, first as a Masters and Ph.D. student. He was then hired at Brock University as an Assistant Professor in 1992 and returned to OISE as an Associate Professor in 1995.

Professor Jones currently holds the Ontario Research Chair on Post-Secondary Policy and Measurement.  He is a past President of the Canadian Society for the Study of Higher Education and a former Editor of the Canadian Journal of Higher Education. Professor Jones has received the Distinguished Research Award from the Canadian Society for the Study of Higher Education and has held numerous Visiting Professorships around the globe.

In response to his appointment, Professor Jones noted, “I am humbled, honoured and excited to be entrusted to lead OISE over the next five years. Given our outstanding legacy, more than ever, we need to work together to create an academic vision and strategic plans that help shape the future of education in Ontario and well beyond.”

Among the many priorities for OISE going forward, Professor Jones emphasized the importance of responding to the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission that deal specifically with education and the review of its Masters of Teaching program, its flagship teacher education offering.
