Queen’s University launches new programs in aging and health

Queen’s University has developed new multidisciplinary programs that will broaden students’ perspectives on healthy aging.

“With many Canadians living longer, society demands a comprehensive understanding of aging, with a focus on health and healthy living,” says Richard Reznick, Dean, Queen’s Faculty of Health Sciences. “These exciting new programs will ultimately serve to enhance scholarship in this important area.”

The School of Rehabilitation Therapy and the School of Nursing collaborated to develop the programs. The graduate diploma and the master of science programs will begin this fall, with the PhD program commencing in two to three years.

“The programs will encourage students to consider multiple issues and approaches that influence healthy aging and living well into old age,” says Marcia Finlayson, Director, School of Rehabilitation Therapy, and Vice-Dean, Queen’s Faculty of Health Sciences. “Participants will expand their professional networks while developing new skills necessary to take on greater leadership responsibilities in their careers.”

Faculty members with backgrounds in occupational therapy, physical therapy, nursing, theology, urban planning, geography, family medicine, French studies and others will deliver the programs.

“The program is timely given the Ontario government’s action plan for seniors and the emphasis across Canada on helping older adults stay safe, healthy, vibrant and active,” says Jennifer Medves, Director, School of Nursing, and Vice-Dean, Queen’s Faculty of Health Sciences. “The programs will focus on enabling people to live the lives they want for as long as they can.”

Queen’s will deliver the programs in a blended format. The students will begin their program with an intensive, on-site session in Kingston during the last week of August. They will then complete the remaining coursework online.

More information about the programs is available online.
