Steve Paikin, Canadian journalist, author, producer, and anchor of TVO’s flagship current affairs program The Agenda with Steve Paikin, has been appointed a distinguished visiting professor in The RTA School of Media and The School of Journalism in the Faculty of Communication & Design at Ryerson University. His appointment begins Jan. 1, 2015.
Over the course of his more than three-decades-long career, Paikin has held reporting jobs in private radio and print media and is best known as the face of TVO’s The Agenda with Steve Paikin. Since joining TVO in 1992, he has produced several feature documentaries and has sat in the anchor chair for more than two decades. Paikin is a leading media figure on the Canadian political landscape; he is the author of four books on Canadian politics and has acted as moderator for six federal and provincial election leaders’ debates.
“As a seasoned, well-respected journalist, Steve Paikin brings a wealth of insight and expertise that will be of tremendous benefit to our students,” said Mohamed Lachemi, provost and vice president academic. “His real world experience will give students an understanding of the ever changing media industry.”
“The opportunity to engage with a leader in Canadian public broadcasting with a unique perspective on Canada, current affairs and politics, is something that both journalism and RTA students look forward to,” said Gerd Hauck, dean, FCAD.
As a distinguished visiting professor Paikin will meet with faculty members and students to offer advice and information, and will participate in workshops, events and discussions on the latest developments in the world of broadcast journalism and current affairs. He will also deliver guest lectures and be available to advise students in both schools on their potential career trajectories.
“I’m very pleased to take on this role with Ryerson,” said Paikin. “I’ve enjoyed offering students advice over the years, and I’m looking forward to sharing my experiences at a time when journalism is undergoing some pretty profound changes.”
Paikin received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Toronto and his master’s degree in broadcast journalism from Boston University. In 2013, Paikin was appointed chancellor of Laurentian University in Sudbury. The same year, he was made an Officer of the Order of Canada, invested into the Order of Ontario, and elected to the Hamilton (Ontario) Gallery of Distinction. He holds honorary doctorates from Victoria University, Laurentian University and Humber College.
