Universities Celebrate Ontario Government Boost to Research

Ontario’s universities and their medical researchers are celebrating the announcement today of $100 million for research funding that the Ontario government is providing to sustain Ontario’s cutting-edge research into genomics and life sciences research.

“The Ontario government truly understands the value of research and its contribution to the social and economic well-being of the province,” said Paul C. Genest, President of the Council of Ontario Universities. “This announcement is yet another example of Ontario’s commitment to ensuring that we sustain the world-class researchers whose work benefits all Ontarians.”

Ontario universities and several associated research institutes, including the Ontario Genomics Institute, will receive this funding to support genomics and gene-related research that will help to ensure the province’s continued strength in this important research area. Ontario is already the 4th largest biomedical cluster in North America and the largest in Canada.

“Ontarians can be proud of the robust research programs at our universities which are not only creating new ways to treat patients and prevent disease, but are shaping social policy, developing new products and services, finding energy alternatives and solving industrial issues,” said Genest. “We thank Minister Wilkinson and the Premier for their continuing strong support for research and innovation in our province.”
