The Government of Canada has announced a major investment in a new Centre for Advanced Research, Entrepreneurship and Innovation (CARIE) at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT).

The $26.9 million federal investment in CARIE supports UOIT’s mandate to be a regional hub of market-driven teaching and research, and to drive new university partnerships with industry and the community. The university will seek further partners and supporters in the coming year to facilitate construction of CARIE.

CARIE will act as a catalyst for a new cluster of advanced manufacturing research and development in strategic industries such as nuclear, electrical and alternative energy systems, automotive and transportation, new materials and robotics. It will integrate and co-locate UOIT’s information technology, gaming and predictive analytics strengths with our advanced manufacturing expertise and facilities.

Quotes

“In addition to helping the university expand its role as a research hub in the eastern GTA, the Centre for Advanced Research, Entrepreneurship and Innovation will support industrial innovation, economic prosperity and community development, and create exciting new entrepreneurial and experiential learning opportunities for UOIT students. The Government of Canada’s investment strengthens the University of Ontario Institute of Technology’s capacity to lever additional support from the business community, donors and other governments.” – Dr. Tim McTiernan, UOIT President and Vice-Chancellor

“The University of Ontario Institute of Technology is a centre for innovation, entrepreneurship and education for all of Durham and leverages our automotive and agricultural expertise and our importance as the nuclear energy hub for Canada. Our government is proud to support UOIT with a $26.9 million investment in the Centre of Advanced Research, Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CARIE). I would like to thank Dr. Tim McTiernan and the faculty and staff of UOIT for their important work on education and economic opportunities for the young people of Durham and Ontario.” – The Honourable Erin O’Toole, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Member of Parliament for Durham

CARIE will be characterized by flexible, multi-functional Advanced Manufacturing research and project space. It will consist of research labs, research offices and facilities for conferences and symposia to showcase UOIT innovation in action.

CARIE will feature separate buildings/towers connected at the upper level floors. The design will be in keeping with the architectural look and feel of the university’s existing buildings at the north Oshawa location.

The Government of Canada’s announcement aligns with the framework and direction of the Campus Master Plan, the document that offers a long-term vision for campus development.
