The Government of Canada has announced a major investment in a new Centre for Advanced Research, Entrepreneurship and Innovation (CARIE) at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT).
The $26.9 million federal investment in CARIE supports UOIT’s mandate to be a regional hub of market-driven teaching and research, and to drive new university partnerships with industry and the community. The university will seek further partners and supporters in the coming year to facilitate construction of CARIE.
CARIE will act as a catalyst for a new cluster of advanced manufacturing research and development in strategic industries such as nuclear, electrical and alternative energy systems, automotive and transportation, new materials and robotics. It will integrate and co-locate UOIT’s information technology, gaming and predictive analytics strengths with our advanced manufacturing expertise and facilities.

CARIE will be characterized by flexible, multi-functional Advanced Manufacturing research and project space. It will consist of research labs, research offices and facilities for conferences and symposia to showcase UOIT innovation in action.
CARIE will feature separate buildings/towers connected at the upper level floors. The design will be in keeping with the architectural look and feel of the university’s existing buildings at the north Oshawa location.
The Government of Canada’s announcement aligns with the framework and direction of the Campus Master Plan, the document that offers a long-term vision for campus development.
Key facts
- In its 12-year history, UOIT has forged ties with more than 400 industry and community partners.
- Site location for CARIE will be guided by the principles of the Campus Master Plan.
- The vision is for CARIE to be located at the university’s north Oshawa location adjacent to Simcoe Street North, north of the Campus Ice Centre.
- It is hoped that construction of the new CARIE building will coincide with UOIT’s celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday in 2017.
