York U to host 6,500 students at Canada’s largest consent education event

York University will host Canada’s largest student orientation event on September 8 when 6,500 new students will be welcomed by University leaders, learn about consent and expectations, and attempt to break the world record for the most number of selfies taken at one time.

Noted speaker Mike Domitrz will talk about the importance of respect, consent and healthy dating at the You Had Me at Consent event, the highlight of York Orientation Day, which features events and activities for incoming students.

Another highlight of the day is a convocation-style ceremony with the piping in of President Mamdouh Shoukri, vice-presidents, deans and college masters dressed in academic regalia, who welcome the students with the taste of what they can expect at their own graduation a few years from now. Students will get some tips on student life from York U alumnus and comedian Gerry Dee (BA ’92), and hear an inspirational poem written by celebrated writer and York U Professor of Humanities Priscila Uppal.

The day will end on a high note with Lion’s Pride featuring a variety of music and dance performances from student organizations, cheers led by the York Orientation Directors Association, and remarks from representatives from the York Federation of Students, and York Lions Varsity Athletics.

The event marks the start of the academic term following move-in day  on September 5 (from 8:30am) when students and their parents are expected to converge on campus to unload vehicles packed to the brim so students can settle into their new digs.
